AJAX development
What of Special about AJAX?
AJAX is an abbreviation from Asynchronous JavaScript and XML. Already the full name of the technology shows its meaning.
AJAX (also spelt sometimes like Ajax) basically is a group of interrelated and web development techniques used on the client-side to create interactive web applications or Rich Internet Applications. So the main thing to note is that AJAX is not a new programming language but a new technique to create better, faster and more user-friendly web apps. AJAX is based on JavaScript and HTTP requests.
The main disadvantage of previously created web applications was the time that user had to wait during web page content refreshment. An AJAX application eliminates the start-stop-start-stop nature of interaction on the Web by introducing an intermediary between the user and the server. AJAX technology enables asynchronous data transfer between user’s browser and the web server, allowing web pages to request small amounts of information from the server without reloading the whole pages.
AJAX is based on the following web standards:
-
standards-based presentation using XHTML and CSS
-
HTML
-
asynchronous data retrieval using XMLHttpRequest
-
data interchange, manipulation and display using XML and XSLT
-
dynamic display and interaction of data using the Document Object Model
-
JavaScript to bind these technologies together

The term "AJAX" itself was coined in 2005.
Jesse James Garrett thought of the term "AJAX" while in the shower, when he realized the need for a shorthand term to represent the suite of technologies he was proposing to a client.
Jesse James Garrett is a co-founder of Adaptive Path, a user experiencestrategy and design firm, and co-founded the Information Architecture Institute.
All of the major products Google has introduced over the last year (Orkut, Gmail, the latest beta version of Google Groups, Google Suggest, and Google Maps) are Ajax applications.
Techniques for the asynchronous loading of content date back to the mid 1990s.
Java applets were introduced in the first version of the Java language in 1995.
In 1996, Internet Explorer introduced the IFrame element to HTML, which also enables this to be achieved.
In 1999, Microsoft created the XMLHTTP ActiveX control in Internet Explorer 5, which is now supported by Mozilla, Safari and other browsers as the native XMLHttpRequest object.
However, this feature only became widely known after being used by Gmail (2004) and Google Maps (2005).
On April 5, 2006 the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) released the first draft specification for the object in an attempt to create an official web standard.
